Sixth-grade days are flying by with busy learning

The days are flying by!  I hope the students are learning as much as I am.  Once our day starts, we stay busy!

In math we worked more with expressions.  Today we added variables to the mix.  We also went over different ways to show multiplication.  When using variables we don't not use "x" to show multiplication because x is often times used as a variable.  There was no homework tonight, unless your child didn't turn in his/her work from yesterday.

In spelling we did a crossword puzzle, using our list.  Next week we will not be doing spelling, as it is a short week.

In language we are still writing on our stories and reviewing subjects and predicates. We are also using this time to review parts of speech.

Have a great Wednesday!

'Math Mondays' to offer extra help in math

We were quite busy today, but that is nothing new to sixth graders. I will be sending information soon about “Math Mondays.” We have a strict calendar that math teachers have to follow. There is not enough time to get the extra help your child might need during the regular day. It will be an after school program in my room. There will be no cost.

In math we played a race game to go over the expressions that we have been working on. We also checked our work from yesterday. Homework for tonight is WB 7 #1-10 and WB 8 odd numbers only.

In spelling we wrote our words rainbow style.

In language we did an activity with complete subjects and predicates.

Have a great Tuesday. Words will be on spellingcity.com tonight.

Sixth graders work on numerical expressions, order of operations

Today in math, we worked on numerical expressions and order of operations.  If your sixth grader did not finish his or her work in class, the assignment is to finish 8 through 27 on page 39.  Please remind your sixth graders that if they are having math difficulties they should come to see me so we can schedule some time to help them catch up.

We went over spelling words today, and they will be up on spellingcity.com tonight sometime.  The work crew has not yet re-hooked my computer in class, so I have to wait until I get home to get the words posted.

In language, we continue to work on writing.  We had a writing activity today that deal with how to work certain story basics -- who, what, why, when, where -- into writing.

We continue to read Gary Paulsen's Hatchet, a young people's classic, as a read-aloud in class.

Friday in sixth grade

I was in Enid today taking care of some personal business, but I will be back in the classroom Monday.  Tell my Jewels I missed them!

Today, students worked on prime factorization some more, and took their weekly spelling test.  My language students studied complete subjects and predicates.

Have a great weekend.

Students balance moving and math

Today seemed to fly by.  If your child didn't come home with his/her Thursday folder, it is because we were so busy trying to get back into our original room.  Tomorrow class will be in our real classroom.  I am so thankful that they were able to get our room finished so quickly!

In math we worked more with prime factorization and introduced exponents.  We added these words to our vocabulary notebook.  We did a page our of our text and most everyone finished today.

In spelling we played Sparkle.  Our test is tomorrow.

In language we worked on yesterday's stories.  They are so anxious to share them with the class.  I can't wait to hear them.  We also corrected sentences on the board.

We had a fire drill today and the class did very well.  They have been so good during this transition.

Maybe things will be calmer next week!

Have a great Thursday evening!

Thursday is Pajama Day at Broadmoore

Tomorrow is Pajama Day at school.  Please wear appropriate pajamas.

Today in math class we looked at prime and composite numbers and prime factorization.  We did workbook pages 3 and 4.

In homeroom, for writer's workshop we looked at descriptive writing and how writers can show, not just tell -- in other words, how they paint pictures with their words.  The class went through a workshop, and then they wrote their own pieces.  They were great!

Sixth graders adapt to school routine

Today was a busy day but we are getting into a routine.  That is always so difficult at the beginning of a new year, no matter the age.
We worked on word problems in math.  We did several together and checked them.  They do have homework for tonight.  It is page 13 and includes 8 word problems.
For bell work (work that is on students' desks when they come in of the morning) we did an anagram page.
For spelling we wrote the spelling word that went along with the clue.
In language we went over procedures for Writer's Workshop.  Our own personal writing coach will be here tomorrow for his first visit.  He is a professor from TCU and works with my class every year.  He does this for classes all over the country, as well as for teachers, but we get him for free!  We are very fortunate.
Tomorrow is Wacky Hair day.  I told the students that I had that every day!
Have a terrific Tuesday!

Sixth grade classes off to a great start

Our blog is up and running, although it will probably continue to be worked on for awhile.

I would like to thank everyone for coming to Open House.  It was great to meet every one of you.

I am still learning names but am getting better.  Our class is a great bunch of young men and women.  I feel fortunate to be able to work with them.

In math today we reviewed simple math operations.  We did it by working problems and matching the given letter to the answer.  I like to use things that might interest the students and I used a Sammy Sosa page today.

In language we set up our Writers’ Notebooks.  We will do a lot of writing this year.  In fact, we have our own writing coach who will visit us from time to time to do a lesson.

In spelling we went over our words.  We also unscrambled sentences using our list.  I have also put this week’s list on spellingcity.com.  Your child wrote down the site and the steps to find our list.  In case that doesn’t make its way home here are the steps again:

             Spellingcity.com
                Students
                Find a list
                Susan Jacobs
Then choose the one at Broadmoore.

This way your child can work on his/her spelling words at home.  Our test will be on Friday. Note that there is a link to spellingcity.com on the right-hand column of this blog.

I also told the class they may have individual water bottles at their desks.

Due to a leak this summer, we are getting new bulletin boards and cabinets.  Yes, after I finally got them upJ. But our room is going to look great once it is done.

Again, thank you for allowing me to work with your child this year.  I have sent home my phone number.  If you didn’t get it, just send a note with your child and I will send it home with him/her.

Have a great Monday evening!
